You're stuck inside Fahrenheit 451, which book do you want to be?
Elements of the Philosophy of Right by G.W.F. Hegel. Hey, someone has to be the obtuse German philosopher! Actually, I would want to be this book because of Part III "The Ethical Life" and in particular the section on the family. Hegel may be difficult to understand and require a lot of re-reading, but his understanding of love is truly engaging.
Love means in general the consciousness of my unity with another, so that I am not isolated on my own, but gain my selfconsciousness only through the renunciation of my independant existance and through knowing myself as the unity of myself with another and of the other with me.
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
I am straight as an arrow, but I have always been deeply in love with Emma's Mr. Knightly. He is who I have always aspired, or rather desired, to be. Well...him or Captain Kirk...as far as want to be, for the crush only Mr. Knightly.
The last book you bought is:
The Perfect Prince. I have been working on, mentally, a fantasy novel loosely based on the War of the Roses and this book fit nicely with some thoughts I have been having on the subject. No, my story isn't an "alternate history," it has a world of its own, I just wanted to avoid the "maguffin hunt" (sp?) so common in fantasy literature today.
The last book you read:
Speaking of fantasy. I have been reading the works of Sword and Sorcery founding father Robert E. Howard. The last book I read was The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane. Just finished it and loved every page.
What are you currently reading?
Deadhouse Gates, City of Towers, and The Polysyllabic Spree. What? Read one book at a time? Are you crazy?! There is too much to read! I'll never catch up.
Five books you would take to a deserted island.
Not really a fair question, in fact it's just mean. But here goes.
The Complete Pelican Shakespeare
Owls Hoot in Daytime by Manly Wade Wellman.
The City of God by St. Augustine.
The Life of Johnson by Boswell.
Boy Scout Fieldbook because I am trapped on a desert island!
Who are you going to pass this stick to (3 persons) and why?
Fritz Hemker, because he is sitting across from me.
David Chute because I am interested in what he would have to say.
Matt Welch because Cathy didn't mention him either.
